
The objective of this dissertation is documentation of photographic archives that address professional practices of late Jayant Harkare during his time as a photojournalist in Tarun Bharat. The copyright of the publication belongs to the Author and National Institute of Design.
Mr. Jayant Harkare was one of the first photojournalists in Nagpur and fondly called ‘the living archive of the city’ given his vivid memories of a city that has come a long way in transition. He was a Navy veteran and is currently a founder-member of the Orange City Photographers Club and jury member at The Indian federation of working journalists.
In 1950s Jayant Harkare served in Navy, where he was given specialised training in Diving at Kochi. Being well versed with camera, Mr. Harkare was part of the squad that photographed underwater to plan out water mines. These photographs were confidential and hence never got published in any form. In 1966, Jayant Harkare acquainted to Balasaheb Deoras, then chief of RSS and editor of its mouthpiece, Tarun Bharat. Belonging to same town, Balaghat, Balasaheb Deoras was familiar with Mr. Harkare’s photography skills and he was offered a photojournalist position in Tarun Bharat. At that time, he was the first photographer employed by any newspaper in Nagpur and continued to be one until retirement in 2003.
He photographed political agitations and indecisive moments of instability , discreet events, urban landscape and socio cultural events in Vidharba district. His collection also includes portraits of the eminent political figures, weddings and family events.
